Guest Speaker at Student Athlete Leadership Meeting: Last week, some of our student-athletes had a chance to catch up with Lucy Dernovesek. Lucy was a student-athlete at Lake Holcombe and found tremendous success individually along with the teams she was on. After earning All-State honors for basketball in high school, Lucy went on to play college ball at Michigan Tech. She said what made things a great experience for her was everyone worked hard to make each other better, there was strong leadership from upperclassmen, and we had fun as a result. One thing is for sure, there is no easy road to attain the successes Lucy attained as a student and athlete, but we sure appreciate her insight and words of wisdom on what it takes! Thank you for visiting with us!

Student Athletes of the Week! Payton Birkenholz has been giving 100% effort at practice. A habit that carries over to game time. Payton has been consistent and has developed grit as she finishes out her first varsity season as a freshman. She goes to the weightroom regularly and brings some teammates with her. Another sign that she is willing to do a little extra for success. Naturally, Payton demonstrates solid leadership skills by keeping a positive attitude. Keep it up, Payton! Kadyn Jones was nominated for wrestling. This past weekend, Kadyn placed 3rd at the conference meet in the 144 lbs weight class. Kadyn has been working very hard to improve his fundamentals and technique. This is beginning to show on the mat when it comes to competition time. Kayden has also been a great teammate by cheering on his fellow wrestlers through tough defeats and triumphant wins. Keep up the great work, Kadyn!

I want to let you know I am changing my official school nursing hours from Mondays to Tuesdays starting February 6th. I will also plan to be at school for a longer day (from 8:30 until 3:00 or so). I am also excited to let you know that University of Wisconsin-Eau Caire, College of Nursing and Health Sciences is placing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Student at the Lake Holcombe School District for their clinical practicum with me this spring! Ms. Emily Olson will be shadowing and working alongside me on Tuesdays, until the first week in April. There are many things that a school nurse does to support kids’ and their families’ health, which extends beyond the emergency nursing services and medication management oversight. As we all know, our students may have various health challenges, and this can affect their educational success. School nurses provide recommendations on health-related policies and procedures, conduct health screenings (vision, hearing, mental health, anxiety, depression), as well as provide health teaching, case management and care coordination for kiddos and their families who are navigating the complexities of health in school and clinical/home settings. School nurses also participate in IEPs, create IHPs, place referrals to health care providers and other community-based and focused resources, work in collaboration with educators and others, while also being able to connect directly with health care providers to support management of a students’ health condition in school, and by working alongside the students’ family. School Nurse Hours: Tuesdays, 8:30 - 3:00 p.m. from 2/6/2024 to 4/2/24. Nursing Services: Any school age student with questions or health issues (and staff) who would like to see the school nurse and students who are considering the healthcare profession as a career. > Blood Pressure checks > Basic physical health assessments and health related screenings > Heart rate and pulmonary health assessments > Teaching on health-related issues (growth and development, wellness, etc.) > Follow up and case management with students with chronic health issues (asthma, diabetes, mental health, musculoskeletal concerns, seizures, allergies, and all other health issues) > Review of medications and side effects > And, other health needs, including screenings of a vast array of health issues

The school District of Lake Holcombe is excited for the first staff spotlight of 2024, Phaedra McDougall. Phaedra is in her fifth year of teaching, but first year here in Holcombe. She graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 2018 and did Americorps before starting her teaching career at Flambeau Elementary. While with AmeriCorps, she coached a middle school robotics team, planned and implemented STEAM summer camps, and helped out in a middle school tech ed class. Phaedra can be described as empathetic, caring and kind. Did you know that she loves cats, playing with her son and being out in nature? She's a fun loving and perfect addition to our elementary staff!

Service for Service: We can never express enough gratitude towards our veterans. This week our Lake Holcombe football team donated funds raised through a fundraiser to support our local veteran's memorial. With some of our middle school and high school players are Dave Staudacher (Land donor for the memorial) and Jim Mataczynski (Project Leader). Always thank a veteran!
