🌧️ A Rainy Day, 18 Phones, and Zero Conversation
During a recent rainy lunch, 18 students gathered in the commons. Every single one was on their phone—no one was talking.
This moment reflects a growing trend we’re seeing across our schools: less face-to-face interaction among students. It’s no surprise, then, that our district’s self-reported anxiety levels are so high:
📊 Middle School: 48%
📊 High School: 47%
We’re asking an important question:
Could reduced conversation and increased screen time be contributing to rising social anxiety?
As a school community, we’re committed to helping students build healthy habits—not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.

📞 How to Reach Your Student During the Day 💬
We understand that staying in touch with your child during the school day is important. While we're working to limit distractions caused by personal cell phone use, we want parents to know there are reliable ways to contact your student if needed:
✅ Call the main office – Our staff will promptly deliver a message or bring your student to the office if it’s urgent.
✅ Email your student’s school account – Many students check their email during non-instructional time.
✅ Send a note with your student in the morning – For planned messages or reminders.
✅ Coordinate through the school counselor or nurse – If the situation is sensitive or requires support.
Reducing cell phone use helps create a better learning environment and supports student mental health. We appreciate your partnership in this effort!

📱 Cell Phones and Learning Don’t Mix 📉
Did you know that just having a cell phone nearby can hurt student performance? A landmark study by Ward et al. (2017) found that even the mere presence of a phone—whether face-up, face-down, in a pocket, or tucked away—can significantly reduce working memory and task performance, especially during complex tasks.
As we continue prioritizing focus and academic achievement, it's crucial to recognize how digital distractions—even when not in use—can impact the classroom environment.
